I need some help (or you can translate this to "I'm feeling too lazy to do the research myself right now").

I'm looking for two things:
  • Fonts: anybody know any good renaissance-y fonts? I'm looking for something that is both relatively period-accurate for Tudor and Elizabethan printed books, broadsheets and handbills, and something that the less-than-educated viewer will think "Oooh, old!" when they see it. Free preferred, but feel free to recommend commercial fonts. OpenType preferred, but feel free to recommend TrueType or PostScript.
  • Tudor & Elizabethan printed things: Books, broadsheets, handbills and signs. Yes, of course, facsimiles preferred, and online sources preferred. At work I've got access to a number of academic online collections, so feel free to recommend restricted services; I might be able to get to them.

For type, scanning down the list of available fonts in Word as installed on my work machine, 'Constantia' looks good, as does 'Clarendon'.

I have no idea at all from whence they come, though.

Don't have either of them, but thanks for the suggestion.

I'm a fan of Garamond, IIRC it's from about 1540.

I love Garamond, but it looks more "classic" than "old."

Fonts --
  • Renaissance at dafont.com isn't really -- but it's got its fair share of flourishes;
  • Luminarium has a number of calligraphic fonts with variable readability;
  • I think your best bet is probably at Scriptorium, which has both fonts and borders. I've been aware of their stuff since the early 90s, and I know they've put a lot of work in.

ForTudor & Elizabethan printed things--

Or drop me a note at firstnamelastinitial (at) g m a i l -- I'll see what else comes to mind.

ILShakeFest and JSL Ancient (from the Luminarium page) may work for my purposes.

JSL Ancient is by Jeff Lee, and the family of fonts can be found here. They're all pretty neat.

Another suggestion is 1,000 free fonts dot com. You may find something there.

Chancery is basically set up to imitate the "new" "Italic" hand that comes in just pre Henry VIII.
I like Chancery Black and Zaph Chancery, both medium if you can find them.
I think I might have some stuff lying around which I will bring on Sunday if we see you.
