Television network knows its ratings are going to tank during the super bowl.

Television network producers start brainstorming for a dirt-cheap thing to run during the super bowl (besides reruns).

Someone has a flash of inspiration (that's the unbelievable part) and comes up with the cheapest, most absurd bit of cuteness to hit the TV since Hamtaro.

They name it Puppy Bowl.

So what's Puppy Bowl?

Build a play area and decorate it like a football stadium.

Put a bunch of puppies in it for a few hours.

Film them playing in the "stadium."

Edit it down to three hours (including a "tailgate party" and a kitten "half-time show").

Run that baby.

This year was Puppy Bowl III, and it featured (besides the aforementioned half-time show and tailgate party) plenty of instant replays and "bowl cam" (a camera mounted at the bottom of the puppies' water bowl).

I watched about 10 minutes. Funniest thing ever.

Simpsonzu?

Torchwood 01x12 "Captain Jack Harkness"

Short review: A bit disjointed. Had its predictable moments (most of them). Still, charmingly enjoyable.

Torchwood 01x13 "End of Days"

Short review: A bit disjointed. I'm not sure how I feel about the resolution of the conflict (it made sense, but it was a bit muddled), and the Maguffin was from way the hell out in left field. The ending was at least better than the rest of the episode.

Overall series: a bit dodgy as a whole, with some really great episodes but also some real low points. It didn't clean up in the last two episodes like Doctor Who did last season. I still liked it.

Spoilers may lie within... )

...seems to be a resounding success.

It's there. People are subscribing/watching. People are recommending (some surprising, some entirely expected). People are commenting.

Technorati is being a bit wonky on the searches. I've got proof that the body-search within the journal works (a search on "Doctor Who" pulled up both posts yesterday with recommendations for BDP-short). I haven't got proof that the tag search across all of Technorati is going to work. [livejournal.com profile] johnnyeponymous posted a fanzine recommendation, after which I did the great tag-rename, and searching on 2006-fanzine-hugo in tags pulls up nothing. This is more irritating since Cheryl Morgan posted an entry in the soon-to-close Emcit blog using the same tag, which isn't being found either.

We'll see how things continue. On the calendar?
  • Nippon2007 announces their nominating window dates and deadlines
  • 2007 Hugo categories are added after January 1, 2007

Anyway, if you were a member of L.A.con IV, or are a member of Nippon2007, you're eligible to nominate for the 2006 Hugo Awards. It's not well known how much influence nominators have on the Hugo Award process. So...

Join. Read the rules. Recommend, and make your opinions known.

And then, when the time comes, fill out your nominating ballot.

Oy...

Cartoon Network is running Pee-Wee's Playhouse.

It's more surreal than I remembered.

Today had Pee-Wee teaching Cowboy Curtis to "pogo" (Pee-Wee as a moshing punker is a bit strange, even before he and Curtis put on the mohawk wigs) and Cowboy Curtis teaching Pee-Wee how to square dance.

Cowboy Curtis looked a bit familiar, though.

I watched the credits. He's credited as "Larry Fishburne."

Haven't heard much at all about the series, other than the references in Doctor Who.

Thank you, Christopher Eccleston, for a truly fantastic season.

...to the BBC's Doctor Who website, complete with pictures of the new Cybermen.

It's a really nice design, with elements of the very early cybermen...

...and most importantly without the blockiness of the 70's and 80's design.

One unfortunate side-effect of the new TV is being able to see how heavy the compression on Comcast Digital Cable is.

K decided he wanted to watch Deep Rising on Starz (digital) yesterday. The backgrounds were loaded with blocky compression artifacts. It's not really obvious when you're a few feet from the TV, but when you're sitting right in front of it adjusting the set and the cable box the 1/4" or larger blocks in the background are impossible to miss.

Oh, and speaking of digital cable, the new TV makes watching pan-and-scan versions for TV even more painful. Nothing like having black bars at the side of the screen where you know there should be picture...

If you read [livejournal.com profile] kproche's last entry, you heard about the new TV.

It's pretty slick.

On the up-side, it fits perfectly in the space available. Perfectly.

On the down-side, it's got only 1 HDMI input and one VGA input, but it's got two component video inputs.

On the up-side, we only have one device that can use the HDMI, and one device that uses component video.

On the down-side, the Comcast DVR has a DVI output, not a HDMI ouput. They're compatible, but the only HDMI/DVI cable I could find quickly (the TV was a charity auction purchase, we didn't plan out cables in advance) was a Monster Cable. I hate Monster Cable. They're the most amazing bullshit artists, turning the excessive prices they get for their cables back into bizarre pseudoscientific marketing and lawsuits. Should have checked Radio Shack.

On the up-side, I got some decent 3-lead AV cable for the component connection to the DVD player pretty cheap, and it's working beautifully.

It only took a few minutes to find the manual for the Motorola DCT6412 DVR and the JVC XV-N55SL DVD player so they could be reconfigured to work with the new TV. The DVR was already set up for 1080i resolution for a 16:9 screen on the component and DVI outputs. The DVD player took a touch more fiddling (and switching a bunch of settings back to "auto") to get things running really cleanly in 480p for a 16:9 screen.

So shiny new TV, working well.

No, I haven't fallen off the deep end, there's a reason.

[livejournal.com profile] kevin_standlee has been approached by [livejournal.com profile] baycon about running a fannish game show, and Match Game is the one he thought of first.

If you've never seen that 70's icon (yeah, its first run was in the 60's, but I remember it from the 70's) that is Match Game you're missing out on something really funny. Host Gene Rayburn and a number of "stars" (well, they were stars at the time... or were they?) play "fill in the blank" with young southern-California housewives (who drove in to Burbank).

Here's a real question: Harriet said "I watch TV commercials very closely, and I discovered that the Ty-dy-Bowl Man is really BLANK."

...or

Nanook the Eskimo built a generator for his igloo. He says "I make my own electricity by putting my BLANK on a treadmill."

The funniest one was Bret [Somers, panelist on the upper tier] said "I remember the first man who proposed to me. I would have accepted, but he was BLANK." The sweet innocent housewife said "gay" but didn't get embarrassed until the audience started laughing. She also got no matches from the panel (her answer was a bit racy for '74).

Kevin is looking for questions. As you can see, not all questions are innuendo-laden. He's going to need some that aren't, on the off-chance he gets a contestant in the Jr. High set.

I'm going to offer up some inspirational themes:
  • Baycon staff members
  • Well-known west-coast BNF's
  • Local conventions
  • Popular fictional characters
  • Larry Niven
  • Jerry Pournelle
  • Jim Burns
  • Craig Miller
  • James Stanley Daugherty
  • Michael Siladi

Email your question ideas to kastandlee (at) yahoo.com with [Match Game] in the subject line (so he doesn't junk it as SPAM).

I've got comments screened, and I'm not going to be at BayCon. If you want to post actual questions in the comments, I'll forward them over.

...into the new Doctor Who series to point out something you might have not noticed.

Keep an eye out for Bad Wolf.

It was mentioned by The Moxx of Balhoon in conversation with The Face of Boe in The End of the World.

It scared the hell out of Gwynneth in The Unquiet Dead.

It was tagged on the side of the TARDIS in Aliens of London and World War Three.

Keep an eye out for the big bad wolf.
