If you had $1k for birthday cakes and a week's lead time, where in San Jose (or the general area) would you go?

I don't know about a week's lead time, but A Piece of Cake bakery in Sunnyvale did our wedding and it was spectacular: http://www.apieceofcakebakery.com/Welcome.html

I'd like to recommend my friend [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com], who made my husband a great looking rocket cake this weekend, or my other friend [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com], who did the amazing gear cakes for Baycon last year, and other cakes for Baycon party rooms. I don't know if either of them have portfolios of their work online, but I do know that starseryn has experience with making full wedding cakes. I am not sure if ladycrim does, though I've seen impressive work from her on different kinds of tiered cakes.

Prolific Oven.

They've changed a little since they did our wedding cakes, but from what I can see of their menues, I'd go back to them.

Second for Prolific Oven. Double chocolate is to die for. My family has been getting these cakes for about 30 years & the quality is very consistently good. Lemon poppyseed is also nice, in the rare instance you have non-chocoholics around.

Great cakes, all sizes. Never a bad experience.

I'd order them from Miglet's (http://migletsgf.com/), but I don't have much of a choice there. (Gluten-free being a requirement.)

On the other hand, Miglet's an awesome baker, so it's not a real constraint any more. Yay.

I've always done homemade or Safeway. Safeway is meh.
But I've heard that Aki's on Meridian Ave (near W San Carlos) is supposed to be excellent. Yeah, it's near my house, so not too far from the Fairmont. www.akibakery.com Pricing is on the website.
They even have sugar free cakes.

They have a LJ community with a bunch of their work. I have never used them but have heard nothing but raves from other folks.

The stuff on the comm is better than the stuff in their gallery on their website.
