'k, so now I've got a computer with more RAM than the OS can address. It's a Pentium D with 8gb of RAM. I've done the research, and the Pentium D supports x64 extensions.

I've already got one solution: I've got a slice set aside to install Ubuntu 8.10 64-bit edition.

What's your word on upgrading the Windows OS? It's currently running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.

I can get all kinds of Windows upgrades through work. XP 64-bit? Vista 64-bit? Vista 64 MCE? What's your opinion?

The last I heard the most XP 64bit could see for RAM was 4 gigs. Sadly you might have to load Vista, although I've been hearing good things about using MS server 2008 as a desktop.

If you must run windoze, use xp. IMHO there's nothing about vista that's worth the headaches. And, according to msdn, xp-64 supports up to 128g (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa366778.aspx#physical_memory_limits_windows_xp).

Or, install freeBSD :-).

32bit architecture only supports 4G of ram in theory. It actually only supports something like 3.5. Its reached the limit of what it can support, so you would need to run a 64bit OS to get more out of the ram, but might have compatibility problems with programs.

I'm afraid that's a "now tell me something I don't know" answer. I run Windows 2003 x64 servers at work, and I'm already planning to load 64-bit Ubuntu on the machine.

I'm particularly interested in experiences and problems with the different 64-bit windows workstation versions.

Vista 32 bit to support the extra RAM. There are no 64-bit apps of any consequence, and many apps and drivers which will not work under 64-bit OS. Found this out the hard way...
