'k, so I'm thinking about some specific dSLRs, based on features and recent reviews.

I'm already leaning towards the Canon EOS Rebel XSi did very well in reviews from American Photo and Popular Photography (yes, I know they're the same publishing company).

Pros:
  • Excellent image quality up to ISO1600, in some cases better than more expensive mid-range dSLRs
  • Fast autofocus
  • Fast continuous shooting
  • Good in-lens image stabilization
  • Canon eTTL-2 flash support

Cons:
  • Max ISO1600
  • In-lens image stabilization
  • No eTTL-2 wireless control from built-in flash unit

Costco price: $820

I have the Rebel XTi (got it from Costco as well). If I had it to do over I would buy it without the lens kit. The lenses that come with it are pretty crappy and I've only used them once.

Fair warning, at least with the XTi, it's a small body camera. Perfect for my hands but tends to be too small for most of the guys I know. I also really like the light weight, but again that can be a drawback for some people.

The on-camera flash can be slow to cycle. Buy the fastest CF cards you can as well. When I go into RAW mode or very high res there is a 2-3 second lag between shots, I wouldn't want to shoot action at high-res with this camera. At small to medium I had really good luck with the sport (golf-swing) setting to get continuous action (see my flickr page for May Day dancing shots).

I leave my 28-135 Canon EF lens on the body all the time and it's been a great camera for me since I bought it last fall. I do everything from jewelry shots in a light tent to cons to landscape work.

I grew up with a manual Pentax ME Super, then jumped to a Canon when I went digital. The menu system takes a little getting used to but I'd never go back.

The new EF-S 18-55mm kit lens is reported to be much improved.

All canons only have in-lens image stabilization.

Yep, but I'm considering some cameras with in-body...
