'k, so I'm thinking about some specific dSLRs, based on features and recent reviews.
I'm already leaning towards the Canon EOS Rebel XSi did very well in reviews from American Photo and Popular Photography (yes, I know they're the same publishing company).
Pros:
Cons:
Costco price: $820

The on-camera flash can be slow to cycle. Buy the fastest CF cards you can as well. When I go into RAW mode or very high res there is a 2-3 second lag between shots, I wouldn't want to shoot action at high-res with this camera. At small to medium I had really good luck with the sport (golf-swing) setting to get continuous action (see my flickr page for May Day dancing shots).
I leave my 28-135 Canon EF lens on the body all the time and it's been a great camera for me since I bought it last fall. I do everything from jewelry shots in a light tent to cons to landscape work.
I grew up with a manual Pentax ME Super, then jumped to a Canon when I went digital. The menu system takes a little getting used to but I'd never go back.
