This weekend when we were visiting friends, I noticed a can of McCann's Irish Oatmeal in the kitchen, and asked if I could check it out.

It's not just the last two cans we bought.

This one smelled of rancid fat too.

I'm wondering if the natural oils in the oats are reacting to the metal in the tin. Weird.

Is there a Whole Foods or a Wild Oats near you? Maybe they have a natural brand of oatmeal you can buy.

I actually like the regular (not quick-cooking) Quaker Oats in a cardboard tube.

TJ's carries "Country Choice Organics" and they're pretty good. A bit finer a cut than the McCanns, but nice and clean-smelling.

I've been eating McCann's for a while but just noticed this with the last can I bought.

Pretty sure that smell wasn't there before, it's pronounced enough that I would have noticed.

Try "Country Choice Organics" steel-cut oats from Trader Joe's.

Is there a Web URL on the label? If so, have you tried looking on their site? There may be a recall or something. If you don't see anything like that, is there a way to leave a comment?

Or if there's a phone number, try calling?

I just switched brands to one that doesn't seem to have the problem.

McCanns - 4 cans, all rancid when opened
Country Choice - 5 cans, all good

You do know that oatmeal should be stored in the freezer? Oats contain oils that go rancid over time.

If we didn't use a 32oz can of oats in 2-3 weeks, it might be a problem. These were stinky from the moment I pierced the seal.
