Fred Phelps isn't my idea of a fun dance partner.

Like Jack Valenti, Falwell may be dead, but his movement and political machine live on. I'll celebrate when they've achieved insignificance.

Ding Dong the Witch is dead

When the Wicked Witch died from acute water poisoning, the Munchkins were finally liberated from oppression. So the bells rang and the streets erupted in joy, a joy tempered by the knowledge that much work needed to be done.

Soon they discovered that the Witch, though wicked and hurtful, wasn't the problem, and her passing not the solution. Building a society with dignity, compassion and opportunity for all is a far greater trick to pull than any witch's spell.

Same is true whether you talk about the Wicked Witch, or the Wicked Moralist.

I despised Jerry Falwell and what he stood for, a Christian Republic every bit as oppressive to the human spirit as the Islamic kind. What he had lost in popular support, he gained in virulence. The fight's still there, with human freedom, risk-taking and creativity at stake. Those are worthy things to fight for.

So we Munchkins just keep marching on.
