Joint Statement from Anime Los Angeles 2007 Masquerade and Hall Cosplay Competition staff.
Equal enforcement of the masquerade rules is the cornerstone of fair competition.
Entry number 20, "Stephane Kohlwey" has been disqualified from the Anime Los Angeles 2007 masquerade competition for violating the rules, and her Workmanship Award for "Excellence in Leather Bodice Work" is hereby revoked.
Rule #1 of the masquerade is All contestants must be attending members of Anime Los Angeles. If the maker and presenter are different people, both must be attending members. Purchased and rented costumes may not be entered.
The bodice and skirt combo that was the most prominent piece of clothing in the entry was purchased from "Leg Avenue Costumes" and is their "FAUX LEATHER UNDERWIRE LACE UP SIDE BUSTIEA LONG GOWN" (sic). We have decided that adding streamers to the skirt and a line of trim to the bottom of the bodice were not significant enough modifications to comply with the rules.
Since the workmanship award was specifically for work on the bodice, we contacted the workmanship judges. They stated that the entrant had claimed the bodice as her own work.
neo_serenity, head of Hall Cosplay Awards, received the same complaint and requested the results of our investigation, which we provided. Because the contestant also misrepresented the bodice to
neo_serenity as her own work, her Hall Cosplay Award has been revoked too.

She... claimed...it... as... her... work?
*Blink*
(personally, I'd never want to claim the shoddy, usually ill-fitting stuff that Leg Avenue churns out as my work, as I'm pretty sure that a 12 year old could do better, but that's just me)
Man, I'm sorry y'all are having such icky outbursts of, um, ick. *waves the pompoms for fairness and honesty and even-handedness*

Date: 2007-02-02 12:27 am (UTC)man, these cheaters - they take a thankless task and make it even moreso. is this normal in the world of anime cons? (I know very little about the con-o-sphere, I have been to 4 FCs and I know the founder of Pantheacon, and that's as far as it goes for me.)

Date: 2007-02-02 02:40 am (UTC)Yes, it certainly had Issues I would never deem acceptable in MY costumes, but I compete in rather a different division. :p
(Some issues: uneven zipper side matching and attachment to skirt work, really basic beginner-quality hemming without knowing the neatness "tricks" that come from experience...)
So yeah, we're not exactly praising Leg Avenue's work with the award here. For a commercial product presumably produced by professional factory sewers, its quality is... not something I'd spend my money on.

Date: 2007-02-02 02:29 am (UTC)Well, she was in the novice category, and the, uh, quality level of the costume was not inconsistent with the sewing class project she claimed it to be. :p
The blatant lying to my face though - I am. Not. Thrilled. *restrains self from more complete expression of my feelings.*

Date: 2007-02-02 02:24 pm (UTC)Good point.
The blatant lying to my face though
*nods* Indeed, the sheer chutzpah is breath-taking.
I was hoping that maybe, just maybe, the gal didn't quite understand the difference between modifying an extant item and making it oneself but, er, a person would have to be pretty daft to be *that* confused... And to hear that she told you it was a project for her sewing class? Never mind, she's not confused, just ballsy.
'tis people like that who take the fun out of it for everyone else involved. :-P
