sarcasm_hime, I've now got an example of an Azis video, from YouTube, of course.
So this is the face of Bulgarian Pop Folk, or chalga.
Of course, it doesn't help that pop folk is the genre that everybody loves to hate, whether it's intellectuals decrying its lowbrow subject matter, leftists decrying its (often) nationalistic bent or conservatives decrying its international roots.
But it really is all that. It's raunchy (and, like much sex-fueled pop, often completely banal; I expect that like many other pop genres it's best when you can't understand the lyrics). It's been strongly identified with nationalist movements (turbo-folk being particularly identified with Serbian nationalism). It blends Balkan, Mediterranean, Romani and Turkish music styles. There's something for everyone to hate.
And then there's Azis. Gay, Roma, flamboyant and a cross-dresser. Superstar of a despised genre. The only Bulgarian musician whose shows can always fill a soccer stadium.
