I was worried when Lost wrapped its season that there wouldn't be anything left worth watching (well, besides Family Guy, Robot Chicken and Good Eats).

Fortunately, something deranged and twisted came along.

If you haven't been watching The Inside you're missing something...

...something creepy.

The Inside is about a FBI special investigations team that profiles and solves serial killings, only the investigations (which do stand out as excellent procedurals) definitely play a subtle second-fiddle to the relationships between the arguably fucked-up but brilliant team members.

So last night's episode was the SM episode.

Yeah, every cop show has to do a S/M episode. Usually badly.

Strangely enough, they handled it very well...

...if in a very creepy fashion...

...and did it in the second episode of the show.

[livejournal.com profile] kproche, [livejournal.com profile] lobolance and I sat there going "This is really sophisticated for television. Maybe it misses out on a few subtleties, but..."

Only I'm realizing it didn't. The big, bad (and really hot) male dom saw himself as a "therapy dom."

Why do they do it? They want to be helpless, but in the end they come out stronger.

That's a really simplistic view of SM, and one that generally gets a bad reaction from groups of pervs.

Looking back, though, the views we got were those of the team (varying degrees of judgement) and the view of the dorky dom (who had been banned from the local private pervy nightclub for bad behavior). Those were acknowleged and needled at.

It really was very sophisticated for television, moreso than a lot of watchers might have realized.
