We ran out of oil for the furnace one Christmas. It wasn't a sob-story really, Dad just forgot to get it filled. We couldn't even get an overtime truck to sort that one out -- we all huddled around the fireplaces and griped at him.
Backed up plumbing? Yeah, that's mucho fun. And "infrastructure problems" over Xmas are even more so.
Xmas 1989 saw me down in Atlanta where I decided that I was old enough to do a Christmas on my own for the very first time. Xmas eve saw one of the coldest weather in the South's history roll through. So cold that it was freezing water pipes down in Florida. The pipes in my little carriage house apartment froze up but good. The landlord wasn't pleased at having to get a plumber out to fix that on that night. He did though.
I woke up the next morning to find a beautiful coating of snow had come down before the dawn.
And to find that the city of Atlanta's water crews had come by and shut off the water to the house. They'd gotten the call the previous evening and only just then gotten to it. No water on Xmas and in a really cold apartment as the heater was in the living room, not the bedroom. Yeah, it was a miserable Xmas day.
Memories folks! You can't buy stuff like that for the memories it makes!
My parents also had the sewer backup the day before everything closed for the holidays. Fortunately, it didn't make too much of a mess and they were able to get someone out that afternoon. Hope your's is fixed by now.
