Bond...
Casino Royale, spoiler free.
The title sequence was gorgeous, just fucking gorgeous. I would have paid just to see the titles. Really.
It only got better from there.
I have high hopes for this writing/directing team in the future.
And then there's Daniel Craig. In squarecut aussie-rower swim trunks. Or naked. Or dressed.
Yum.
My only bitch? They switched from Baccarat to Poker, to make the movie more accessible. Makes sense. The Vesper recipe, though? It's still using the aperitif wine from the book, Kina Lillet. A wine that hasn't been made in decades; they changed the brand name long ago and the recipe almost 20 years ago. If they had switched to Lillet Blanc, it would have been reasonable and obtainable.

I loved the film and I think Craig is going to make a great 21st Century Bond. I can't wait for hte next one!

They replaced Smert' Shpionam (Smersh) with a vague unnamed terrorist organization, but Le Chiffre was still an evil banker just as in the book.

They changed the time period to make it a modern adventure movie instead of a period piece. It's still the beginning of Bond's career and starts with him earning his 00 status.

The comment I heard was that they would be out of place today (among the above mentioned group) and that boardshorts would have been more "correct" (or, to more accurately quote the commenter "not so gay").
The person making the comment was unaware that Americans are weirdly prudish in swimwear and apparently doesn't know James Bond is most definately not American.
Until knowing the time period of the film, I couldn't respond "but that's what everyone wore back then". Now I can simply say "but that's what everyone wears everywhere but here".
More's the pity.
Blast from the Past!
Speaking of "James Bond", here's a blast from your past. Last time I saw you was at our ten year class reunion. What're you up to these days?
Re: Blast from the Past!
Well, back at the reunion, I was talking about moving to California, and I did about 6 months later. It's been pretty crazy since then. Work is San José State University, running one of the email systems, which is pretty easy and pays reasonably well. I'm up to my eyeballs in various community organizations, but I've been most active in science fiction fan groups in the last two years;
Most of my Manitowoc connections have faded. My sister has been in Madison for almost a decade, and my parents are spending 5 months of the year in Florida, so the news doesn't flow as freely as it used to.
Just added you to my friends list, so you'll be able to see locked posts (not that I make that many of them).
