With all this talk of lighting, [livejournal.com profile] jadecat9 politely suggested that I actually learn what the hell I'm doing with light before going out and buying a ton of equipment.

On her recommendation I picked up a copy of Light: Science and Magic, the book to buy on photographic lighting.

It should be showing up in the mail today.

Just so y'all know, we've officially offered to run consuite for World Fantasy Convention 2009 here in San Jose.

For those of you not in the know, World Fantasy has, over the years, developed into a primarily fantasy literature professionals' convention. Fans do attend the convention, but fanac isn't the focus. If you're only looking for costuming, media, gaming or fan programming, this isn't for you. If you're looking for lit programming, looking for a juried dealers room loaded with fantasy booksellers (and maybe a few surprises), looking for a juried fantasy art show, looking to hang out and drink with writers and editors and looking for good parties (all the major fantasy publishers throw great parties at WFC) you need to come.

Like all traveling conventions, WFC is a pay-to-go con, regardless of whether you're working or not. Unlike many traveling conventions, the WFC Board and WFC Board Chairman David Hartwell maintain a very tight leash on the local organizers, and that includes heavy restrictions on offering any sort of discounted and comp memberships.

So that all said, we're looking for folks who are interested in attending WFC2009 (or are already planning to attend) and who would be willing to work for us in Hospitality.

We're considering different decoration schemes, but since the major theme of the convention is "Celebrating Edgar Allan Poe's 200th Birthday" we're looking at the times of Poe's writing career (starting with published poetry in 1824 and published stories in 1832 to his death in 1849) and his stories as a foundation.
